Someone somwhere organized a day without Facebook day for today. I noticed it when one of my 'Facebook friends' signed up for it. This was about a month ago. The idea is to show Facebook whose boss so to speak. Quite frankly, I didn't expect a boycott like this would show anybody anything because let's face it, Facebook is an addiction and the powers that be behind Facebook know it.
Personally, I don't necessarily think it's a "bad" addiction. Being 'addicted' to meeting and sharing with other people can be a very rewarding part of a person's day. For example, I am 'addicted' to my running group and our weekly runs through summer and fall. I look forward to meeting people who support my goal of getting and staying physically fit. The interaction with them keeps me mentally fit too. Yet few would tell me I should quit this addiction.
Having said all that, I do think the ability to 'quit' ... the ability to say I won't do this today because someone or something else requires my attention helps to decided whether the addiction is too much. So, even though I don't think a boycott of Facebook for one day will make any difference to the adminstrators of Facebook, and even though the organizers of the boycott did not intend it to be used as such, I signed up for the "Day Without Facebook Day" anyway.... just to show that I could quit for a day.
This morning, I logged on to my computer and checked my email... and before I knew it I was also logged onto Facebook, too......
Am I addicted? No, I'm just old and forgetful and I need to be reminded of things sometimes.
