I found information for USA Rail Passes which I believe is probably what became of the "All Aboard America" pass that Mr. Loomis spoke about. Remember his book was written in 1995. The Rail Pass is for 15, 30 or 45 days and allows 8,12 or 18 segments of travel respectively. It applies to coach travel. You could travel around the US and parts of Canada on this pass, getting on and off when you wanted provided it was within the time and number of segments allowed. Not appropriate for our trip as we are simply trying to get there but it is a tidbit worth saving for the future. There is a separate California Pass too. Intriguing!
For those of you at the right age and enrollment they also have a student advanatage program.
I am going to have to really learn my digital camera. It has a gazillion settings that I have no idea how to use but I bet if I did I could take better pictures in general and definitely for this trip. So I now have a project (like I need another one) to work on between now and the trip!
I have found nothing on the Amtrak-United connection. It's quite possible it doesn't exist anymore.
Most of the pictures and traveloges I've been able to find so far show or talk about the Eastbound travels of these trains that we will be riding. So I have to read backwards! LOL I found a picture a site called Railpictures.net. It is of the Capital Limited heading to the Inauguration. Scroll down to photo # 268008. It is a very nice one!
